Good luck!

Hey Greg, congrats on SURF MULES…what is the story?

Two surfers graduating from high school become embroiled in a world of disorganized crime. The crime in this case is muling pot across country for a local dealer, a quick and easy summer job that quickly turns into a roadtrip into the heart of darkness. It’s a coming of age story about that transition from adolescence to adulthood, particularly tricky amongst surfers who refuse to grow up. It’s also the story of a friendship on the brink of disaster.

How did you get the idea?

Years ago, I befriended some actual surf mules and the stories they told me were so outrageously entertaining, I thought there’s a great story in there. I was a filmmaker at the time and worked on a script with a friend of mine on the subject but it never happened. Then about 5 years ago, I encountered a surfer’s funeral on the beach. A young kid had died in a surfing accident and 4 generations of surfers turned out to celebrate his life. I was quite taken by it and just wrote a short story that captured the scene. But my writer’s group liked it so much, they kept asking for more, until they tricked me into writing a novel! Somehow the idea of muling came into play and before I knew it, I was writing a teen novel about surfing drug traffickers! Sometimes the characters lead you to places you could not have possibly planned for…

This is your debut YA fiction, but not your debut, how are your books different?
My first published book for teens, Chess Rumble, was a middle grade illustrated free verse novella (deep breath). My first written book, Yummy, is a the middle grade graphic novel that will hopefully emerge in the next year. So this is my first real novel and my first book without pictures!

I am a big fan of Zombicorns who’d eat either Edward or Jacob. No distinction there.

What was your revision process like?

Good god, I went all Barton Fink at the end. I almost lost it but I somehow survived. Had I not already written another novel in between revisions, I might not have tried it again. The first rounds were pretty straight forward, no big deal. But at the 11th hour and on a very tight deadline while I was away in Europe, we agreed to lose 50-70 pages and that’s where I enter the 8th circle of Dante’s Inferno known as revision hell. But it only made me stronger, and the novel became tighter and definitely better. I almost think that experience will make revising easier in the future, like I grew a thicker skin. At least, that’s what I hope.

Your book trailer is awesome! How did you create that?

Years ago, I was a filmmaker and was in the movie trailer business for all the studios. So coming up with a good preview concept has always been in my blood. I called in all my filmmaker friends and favors to make trailers for both Chess Rumble and Surf Mules. I am extremely proud of the results and get to show them off everytime I do school visits. It’s almost like showing off my short films as an opening act to my books.

What’s up next?

Got several projects coming out: YUMMY, that long in the works graphic novel will finally see light of day early next year, then in 2011, my follow-up Putnam novel CAUGHT and later, from Candlewick, an illustrated novella called GHETTO COWBOY. I am also attempting my first picture book text…

Thanks for much for coming on, Greg.

Surf Mules Praise:

“Neri’s novel catches readers’ interest on the very first page and propels them to the end in this intense, funny, and exciting read. Reluctant readers will be hooked on this fast-paced, interesting adventure… it is a definite buy.” -School Library Journal

“Harrowing… Neri delivers a powerful story that doesn’t flinch… Sometimes brutal, but always realistic, this will find an audience among teens looking for gritty contemporary fiction.” – Booklist

“The tortured but loving friendship between Logan and Z-boy proves poignant and heartbreaking. Logan’s agonized wrestling with morally ambiguous choices and his flawed yet appealing family and friends should find a wide audience.” – Publisher’s Weekly

“Neri sandwiches his story between a crackling opening and a whipsaw climactic scene… older boys who say they’ve never read anything will be attracted to the novel’s… [view of a] friendship on the brink of disaster.” – Kirkus Review

“I loved it– I was totally hooked… a gripping and meaningful tale with some beautifully literary moments.” -Literacy for Teens

“All you have to do is read the opening chapter and you will be hooked on reading this fast-paced, interesting tale. Intense, funny and exciting. This is a must read.” – Winters’ Wonderland

Okay, y’all—leave those SURF MULES sentences in comments to be eligible to win. Even if you have the book you can still play. Just write (no thanks book) after your entry.

Thanks!

D&A baby!

August 26, 2009     /     Comments (0)

For non-publishing geeks the term D&A is ‘delivery & acceptance’ which means I delivered and my publishing house accepted my revisions (phew) and SEA is now in bound copies seeking blurbs etc. (this you already know). So my agent sent me the second half of my advance minus her 15% and that is that. Another milestone checked off the old list.

Next step is First pass pages, which means I get to look at a type-set copy and scan it for mistakes (I think?) and then on to…ARCs (or galleys)–ARC’s are advance reader’s copies for booksellers/librarians/reviewers (yes, this post is entirely designed around my mom reading it. I’m sure you’ve cued into that by now.)

Anyway, coolness. I’m off to the Bahamas* to celebrate!

Have a great day!

*and by Bahamas, I mean Target. To buy school supplies for Super E.

ME: Pass the sunscreen.
SUPER E: Why would you need sunscreen in a Super Store?
ME: Oh. Um. Never mind then.

Me and My Blurb at Prom (And Why I Love Mondays)

August 24, 2009     /     Comments (0)

1. I look forward to Monday now. Not because I don’t love weekends and love being with my family, but because on Monday publishing is back in business and sometimes that means news. FUN NEWS. And I miss my editor when I don’t hear from her. (I’m a lunatic, I know.)

2. Also this Monday? Was Spoil Heidi Monday. Not only did I get my hair done (you see those sunshine-y streaks in my author pic? Well, they are someone’s art work. And not nature’s.) BUT BUT BUT I got my toes done too. Painted blue. With white polka-dots. Yes. Then the lady was like, “Do you want a shoulder rub?” I mean, has anyone in the history of humans answered no to that question? YES. Yes I do, thank you. So some odd $$ later, I make it out of there feeling like a million bucks.

3. Cutest. Thing. Ever.
THIS IS YOUR LIFE MAGGIE STIEFVATER created by our very own Jackson Pearce.
I don’t know how she did it, but it’s utterly adorable.
Go here to watch: watchmebe

4. Super E starts First Grade tomorrow. This I can hardly believe. My baby boy. But he got the best first grade teacher and he’s all ready to go with his hipster Back-To-School clothes courtesy of The Mom. He’s excited about it. But the days will be long. And I’ll no longer be able to take him out to lunch. Things will be different, but good. Change and growth are good right? Yes. I remind myself. Though I want to bundle him up and clutch him to me forever. I know I can’t do that. Because that’s weird.

5. Waiting for blurbs. It’s sort of like waiting to be asked to Prom. You know it “might” happen, but you aren’t sure. And you don’t know who will ask. Or won’t. Or will laugh at the very idea. Fortunately, I got my first blurb and I LOVE LOVE it and that seriously has kept me afloat, because you just never never know. Just because I like my pink taffeta dress doesn’t mean everyone will. Heh. So I’m supposed to wait to share it.

So I wait, patiently.
Like him.

And daydream:

Me: Forever Young is my favorite song.
My Blurb: Mine too! Clearly we are made for each other.
Me: Even though my hair looks like this?
My Blurb: It’s the INSIDE that counts.
Me: Les sigh.

Unsettling rumors begin to swirl about ghosts, a madwoman roaming the halls, and Parry’s involvement in a group of corrupt sorcerers for whom the rules of the living and dead are meant to be broken for greater power. Horsin’ Around

August 19, 2009     /     Comments (0)

Hey all! Back from our Grand vacation in the Tetons and Yellowstone and Jackson Hole.

Amazingly, I survived NINE WHOLE DAYS WITH NO INTERNET.

I thought it couldn’t be done.

The first two days the withdrawal was bad.

But then I gave into to the experience:

My wrangler, Jake (cutie!)

Me on my horse. Rugrat. His name fit him perfectly.

Me with horses behind me. (Obvs.)

Breathtaking view of the Grand Tetons.

If I ever go missing? I’ve gone Cowgirl.

After all, you can’t write if you don’t live.

=)

New LIAR, Mom Jeans, and The Person I Love Most This Week!

August 6, 2009     /     Comments (0)

1. New cover for LIAR: http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6675065.html?nid=2788&source=link&rid=1000205892

2. notyourmothers event at Books Inc. Palo Alto tonight. John Ritter, author of famed baseball books will be the speaker. He was also a lively guest at my critique group this week. Speaking of Book’s Inc. and their high levels of awesome, they’re opening up their 12th store! This one is in Berkeley. During a recession, an Indy book store doing so well is just…bliss to the ears. Way to go Books Inc. staff for running such a great show.

3. SEA is officially “in production.” This is terrifying and exciting. The next copy I see with be my First Pass Pages. Type-set and readable (I hope). I can still make little changes, but working with big swaths of manuscript is over. Godspeed little book. Speaking of YA books, my buddy Maggie (remember her? The Sausage Queen?) is the author of a NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING BOOK! SHIVER debuted as #9 and I suspect it will keep climbing. Congrats, m_stiefvater it’s a beautiful story and deserves all the accolades its receiving.

4. I’m the proud owner of a new pair of blue jeans from the GAP. They are cute. I figured if I’m going off to Wyoming to play cowgirl I best be sporting some jeans.

Hopefully my look will be more this:

And a little less this:

(Yet I fear the worst…)

5. And in the Who Do I Love This Week category?

You guessed it!

What a freaking stud. I’m rarely shocked in a good way by someone’s awesome, and Former President Bill Clinton jetting off to diplomatically free two female journalists from prison? Wow.

Okay all, have a great weekend and I’ll catch you next week!

Mayhem!

August 4, 2009     /     Comments (0)

Hey all–

I’ve emerged from my Batgirl cave. What have I been up to you ask?

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: Copy-edits.

My mom/dad/sisters: I thought you finished your edits? What are you talking about? Is this just an excuse not to call us?

My husband: *glares*

My son: “All you do is work on that computer. Don’t you love us anymore?” (An actual comment.)

My baby: “Mamammamaamm” (Following around her Daddy.)

Me: Blusdkjsekrjwlekrjwlekjfdsfjk (that’s the sound my mouth makes when it tries to form words)

But GOOD NEWS IS: They are sent! And I think they look pretty good. I added a bit here and there–had to find the Chinese translation for FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT etc. etc. I won’t get into all the gritty stuff, but it’s finished.

AND…

We leave for our family vacation on Friday!

We’re going here:

And will hopefully see one of these:

And we’re going to do this!

And I’m not bringing my computer OR my blackberry! (Well, I am bringing my phone, but I turned off the email thing.)

In other words, it’s a good old-fashioned family vacation. Kinda like this:

Only with less Getting Arrested and stuff.

;)

Copy-edits arrived! So one must have a copy-edit song…

Oh Jack and Kate and Sawyer…how I love you.

And this original version by John Denver is a heart favorite. My parents used to listen to John Denver albums all the time when I was a little girl. And I love the way this modern teen put up the lyrics with the cool pictures. Adorable. Okay, back to work.
