Just finished it. What a great book.If you haven’t read it, please do cuz it made it on the list of my all-time favorite YA’s. I can’t wait to gush to Cecil C. about it in LA and beg her to sign it and basically make an ass out of myself. What I liked best:
1. I could totally relate to the MC, Katy. She seemed real, and I also loved Lake who also seemed very real.
2. I loved the fully fleshed out grown-up characters who weren’t your usual wa-wa-wa Charlie Brown grown-ups.
3. I liked how deep it was on so many levels, but written with a very accessible light/bittersweet tone…
4. …and I loved The Rat. I worked with a guy who could easily play him in the movie version at a costume shop in NY–he was manic and crazy and amazing. Basically, he rocked.
Thanks, Cecil.
kidlit_kim created a lj group for SCBWI LA’ers! If you don’t already know about it, here’s the link:
scbwi_la_07 i’m so excited, though have recently learned i’m also totally unprepared and need to shop! the scbwi la’ers are also cooking up a fun NERDFIGHTER idea, so if you’re a john and hank fan, check it out the group as well. i’m hoping to have some official news on SEA to share by then, but we’ll see! have a great day, y’all.
If you have an art house movie theater near you, take a break from adolescent wizards and go see ONCE, a beautiful, goose-bump inducing boldly original musical love story produced for pennies. sarazarr loved it, I loved it, and betcha you will too. The soundtrack, for sale at the popcorn counter, will keep the characters in your hearts for long after.
Enjoy, Potter and/or Hank-er fans. Don’t worry, it’s totally SPOILER FREE

| What Be Your Nerd Type?
Your Result: Social Nerd
You’re interested in things such as politics, psychology, child care, and peace. I wouldn’t go so far as to call you a hippie, but some of you may be tree-huggers. You’re the type of people who are interested in bettering the world. You’re possible the least nerdy of them all; unless you participate in other activies that paled your nerdiness compared to your involvement in social activities. Whatever the case, we could still use more of you around. ^_^ |

*i wrote that i’ve written a full book and starred in a play and this is what i got?
well, in general, i suppose I AM a big giant social nerd. what kind of a big nerd are YOU?
Keep in mind I’ve read half of book one. That’s it. I’ve watched the first 4 movies and read the H7 NY Times book review posted on literaticat blog. I thought the review made H7 sound just like Return of the Jedi but w/ kids in wizard suits instead of grown-ups in space suits. But because I feel left out, I’m making a prediction based on nothing but a crazy instinct:
-Voldemort (mart?) is Harry’s father
-Malfoy will be killed
-The sweet giant of a man will be killed–Hagrid, thanks x_think_twice
-Harry, Hermoine and Ron will live happily ever after.
Just for fun, what are your predictions?? I’ll save them and we can look back later and see who among us is NOSTRA-J.K.-DAMUS JUNIOR. Also, feel free to chastise me for posting about Harry at all. =9
1. I’m thankful for carriejones who posted about the Cambodian monks being abused, disrobed and imprisoned just for practicing their religion. This is not okay. Please see Carrie’s post and help us do something about it. Monks are some of the most peaceful, kind and tolerant people we have here on our planet. We must help protect them. I’m happy people like Carrie care about these things and spread the word. It could happen anytime anywhere. It could happen to you and me. We must take a stand when they happen to others.
2. I’m thankful for my son who has made me a birthday cake and a wedding cake this morning out of Leggos. He told me, “if you eat the blue block your ears will look like a train, you know like smoke coming out of your ears like on a train.” Sometimes I wish I could freeze him at this age forever because he is so precious.
3. I’m thankful for my husband who hiked 9 miles in the middle of the night w/ a rock lodged in his foot to the local ER while on a crazy backpacking trip. Then DROVE home 6 hours to see us. Then the next day he hobbled to a meeting w/ several professors where he will start up a new human rights program at the U. He amazes me.
4. I’m thankful for my neighborhood friends who while I’ve been hermited away writing my book have encouraged me and loved me even though most of the time my mind was in an Indonesian pesantren and not here in the ‘hood. I’m thankful for my friend who runs a coffee house in her house whooping up the espresso machine for whoever stops by. *sigh*
5. I’m thankful for the roof over my head, the food in my ‘fridge, and the hot water in my shower. A lot of people in the world do not have these things we often take for granted.
6. I’m thankful that my 88-year-old GRANDFATHER just read SEA and said, “It was one of the best books he’s ever read.” Yes, he’s my grandpa, but I’ll take that over a starred review in Kirkus anyday. (Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but it’s the sweetest thing ever (even though it makes me blush thinking about him reading the ‘steamy’ scene.)
7. I’m thankful that my in-laws are coming, I finally get to go see ONCE, which I’ve heard is the dreamiest movie ever, and get to go out to dinner w/ hub where we’ll get to talk about our weeks.
8. I’m thankful for my agent who is working SO hard in NY…I’m thankful for the interested editors, I’m thankful that I don’t work on the business side of publishing cuz it might drive me batty!
9. I’m thankful for the gorgeous fall-like weather we’ve been having here.
10. As always, I’m thankful for all of you here on lj—and I can’t wait for SCBWI LA!!
